FRONTBEACH BACKBEACH

24 Nov -

30 Nov 2023

Curated by David Cross & Danny Lacy

With some exceptions, art is usually an activity where we look directly ahead. Whether it’s to a wall or objects positioned in an exhibition space, the horizontal is largely privileged over the vertical.

Lisa Waup (Gunditjmara/Torres Strait/Italian) is asking us to rethink how we search for and engage with objects in space and in particular what floats above us. Her work for FBBB takes place in the sky at regular intervals across the month of November. Known for intricate and dextrously formed patterns straddling but not limited to drawing, experimental printmaking and woven objects, Waup has conceived a series of mobile forms that float and bend with the patterns of the wind. While these structures speak to the energies and visual dynamics of the sky, the patterns themselves reference water and its reverberation. Where in western culture such a dichotomy is seen in opposition, as separate things, Waup’s First Nations cultural knowledge elides them together. For her land and water constitute a single cultural landscape.

seaing-Country will launch from various locations in Flinders, Cape Schanck and Portsea depending on the wind. Please subscribe to our mailing list and follow us on social media to keep up to date on session times and locations.

On Sunday 27 November 2023 between 12.00pm to 5.00pm, seaing-Country will launch from the Portsea Paragliding launch site, next to London Bridge car park.
