As an artist, I am continually drawn to stories which resonate with history, culture, and the profound interconnectedness of humanity and Country. In considering this space and creating new work for JC Decaux, I was captivated by the iconic location and the Harbour. Nestled in the embrace of Sydney Harbour, with the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge as its companions, the presence and movement of water stayed with me long after I visited the site. When considering this space, I can't help but reflect upon what it would have been like for the Eora people, the original custodians of this land. Water was not merely a backdrop but an integral element of their survival and culture. It sustained, inspired, and connected them to the land in profound ways.
In interConnected, I capture the essence of the water and the timeless connections between people and Country. The lines and forms I've created represent water and people, mirroring the ever-changing movement of Country, people, and culture. The textures in the work draw from my practice as a printmaker and deep histories of mark-making and craft techniques. This work speaks to the diverse tapestry of people who call this place home, each bringing unique stories and perspectives.
These themes are encapsulated in the spirit of a large-scale woodblock print, where each mark is created by hand. This intentional and tactile approach adds a layer of significance, inviting viewers to appreciate the depth, light, and shadow in the work and echoing timeless practices of mark-making. The work's layering of interconnected circles and lines of connection speaks to togetherness and sharing of knowledge and ideas within this place.
I hope this artwork becomes a visual bridge between the past and the present, a point of connection that reminds us of our shared humanity and responsibility to our Country. It's an invitation to pause, reflect, and appreciate the profound beauty surrounding us both in nature and human experience.
